STUDENT PROGRAMS & WORKSHOPS

The Meditation Lab has been adopted by dozens of public and private schools as a model for wellness and stress reduction for children and teenagers. Now part of the physical education curriculum of many schools throughout New York City, Westchester County, and the Bronx, the program has impacted over 8,000 students, teachers, coaches and administrators.

Learning Outcomes

In the Meditation Lab, students will learn tools and techniques within the physical education curriculum to increase focus and deepen concentration. Through the practice of mindfulness meditation, participants will develop greater self-awareness and strategies to regulate their emotions to navigate the ups and downs of everyday life.

In each session of The Meditation Lab, students are introduced to the practice in a unique way. The lab is held during physical education class. Sessions begin with an introduction, followed by simple stretches to warm the body and quiet the mind, a guided relaxation, a unique meditation with a specific focus, and finally a question/answer period.

Available Programs

The Meditation Lab offers four main programs for students.

The Full Lab

In each of the three sessions of The Meditation Lab, middle and high school students are introduced to the practice in a unique way. The lab is held during physical education class. Sessions begin with an introduction, followed by simple stretches to warm the body and quiet the mind, a guided relaxation, a unique meditation with a specific focus, and finally a question/answer period.

In each session, a different meditation tool and technique is explored. At the end of the lab, students participate in a group discussion about creating a system to integrate the practice into their daily lives. Simple and practical ways to incorporate two minute “mindfulness moments” will be shared.

The aim of the program is to align with the primary goals of physical education ~ fitness for a lifetime. This includes mental health as well as physical fitness.

Mini Lab

In this one day introduction to The Meditation Lab, elementary, middle, and high school students approach meditation in a unique way. During the 40 minute class, students are taught how to quiet their minds through a very simple system of meditation. The class begins with a series of stretches to warm the body and settle the nerves, giving students the opportunity towards stillness.

Students are encouraged to follow a simple three-step approach as they are guided through the meditation. At the end of the lab, students participate in a group discussion about creating a system to integrate the practice into their daily lives.

The goal of the program is to introduce students to practical applications of the meditation tools so the techniques can be used any time they feel stressed or overwhelmed.

After School Athletics Lab

This unique program is offered to JV and Varsity athletics teams pre-season, mid-season and postseason. Athletes are introduced to meditation techniques that will keep them centered and steady when faced with the anxiety that comes from high pressured games and performances. In the lab, stories of professional athletes who rely heavily on meditation to give them the edge they need to perform at their highest level are shared.

Sessions begin with an introduction, followed by simple stretches to warm the body and quiet the mind, a guided relaxation, a unique meditation with a specific focus, and finally a question/answer period. Group discussions include basic information about the benefits of meditation and how it can help reduce stress, improve focus and enhance concentration. Athletes are reminded that meditation is a practice they can add to their intense regimens to help them perform at higher levels.

In the lab, athletes learn firsthand how to use these tools to minimize the psychological stress that comes from intense physical exertion and competition.

Competitive Athletics Leagues

Created as an extension of the After School Athletics Lab, this program is unique because it can be offered anywhere. It doesn't matter what sport you play, or where you play it, any athlete can benefit from meditation. Whether it is at a convention center for competitive cheerleading, or an ice skating rink for travel hockey, the magic of this program is in its mobility. Before a big event, athletes who are introduced to meditation techniques are more likely to be centered and steady when faced with the anxiety that comes from high pressured games and performances.
